National Seminar on Global Financial Crisis and Changing Dynamics of Indian M&As.

The NATIONAL SEMINAR in IMS, Noida, saw a galaxy of speakers enlighten the young and dynamic minds of PGDM and MIB and ignite them with the spirit of inquisitiveness. The seminar focused on the developments in the field of mergers and acquisitions in the Indian and global markets. The aim of the seminar was to discuss the competitive M&A driving corporate development.The immediate effects of financial crisis on the M&A have also been diverse across the various sectors of the Indian economy. The eminent speakers threw light on these developments and helped understand what is required to successfully complete a merger and acquisition and also develop our comprehension on how an aggressive M&A strategy in the past has affected firm performance during the crisis.

The speakers included eminent personalities like Mr.C.P.Jain, Former CMD,NTPC, Mr. N. Kumbhat, Finance consultant, former director Shyam Telecom Ltd, Mr. R.Kamra, Finance Director, KRIBHCO, Ms. Bhawana Kohli, Associate Director,PWC and Mr. Yogesh Gupta. The judges for the paper presentation session were the stalwarts of finance, Dr. K.M.upadhayay of J.I.M. Noida and Dr. P.K.Gupta of Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi.

There were 7 paper presentations in the National Seminar
1. "Mergers & acquisitions in Service sector: Changing global scenario" presented by Mr. Subhash Verma, Mr. S. Shantanu, Mr. Aditya Dwivedi of Galgotia College Of Enginering, Greater Noida.
2. "Motives and benefits for mergers and acquisitions in Indian banking sectors with special reference to global financial crisis" presented by Mr. Arun Mittal and Mr. Ajay Yadav of B.l.T, Greater Noida
3. " Merger & Acquisitions in the Indian banking sector; A note on opportunity and imperatives "presented by Ms. Kalpana Gupta of J.I.M,Vasundhara.
4. "Global financial crisis and mergers waves in year 2008" presented by Dr. Am it Kothari and Ms. Uma Luthra
5. "Financial crisis and financial stability" presented by Ms. Reema Gupta and Ms. Aastha Vats of I.I.M.S. Meerut
6. "Mergers and Acquisitions as a business strategy in the backdrop of recent global crisis" presented by Mr. Aijaz Ahmad and Dr. Neeraj Saxena of IMS, Noida

7. "Employee communication: A must measure to avoid merger failure" presented by Mr. Govind Prasad Goyal of IMS,Noida.

The coordinators of the seminar were Ms. Pallavi Paliwal (Sr Lecturer) and Ms. Reenu Bansal (Lecturer)of Finance Department. The inaugural ceremony was conducted by Ms. Supriya Saxena and Mr. Mohd. Amir. The first and second sessions were conducted by Ms Sonika Sharma,Ms. Aruna Deva , Ms. Gurprit and Ms. Aditi(PGDM Students). Paper presentation session was conducted by Dr.Tanu Kashyap. There were cash prizes for first and second prize winners in the paper presentation session. The first prize was bagged by Mr.Aijaz Ahmed IMS,Noida and Dr. Neeraj Saxena. The second prize went to Ms. Kalpana Gupta of J.I.M. Vasundhara.



Faculty Development Program on 'Research Methodology

IMS Management considered it desirable on the basis of representations from various faculty members to arrange an FDP for those who were desirous to have an in-depth learning on modalities undergoing through a Doctorate Programme in management and other disciplines like IT, Law, etc. and also how to write a research paper.Associate Professor, Dr. Naved Mohammad Khan of Faculty of Management Studies, AMU Aligarh was the resource person to conduct 2 day workshop.

The programme was conducted at the Institute's premises on 5th & 6th March, specifically for the faculty members to sharpen up their skills for writing of research papers and their publications in various Management journals.Mrs.Sonika Sharma, Asstt. Professor coordinated this FDP under the guidance of Mr. Aok Aggarwal, Advisor IMS. A group of 24 delegates from all the disciplines like IT, Law and Management participated in the workshop. Two delegates from IMS Dia and a Reader from Delhi University were among the delegates. The workshop proved to be a fruitful and learning experience for all.



Events @ IMS College Law Advisory Committee Meeting

We need to produce future Law professionals of substance not of just mugged up knowledge" said Justice J.D.Kapoor while deliberating at the Law Advisory Committee Meeting organized by IMS Law College on March 19, 2010. The meeting started with a welcome note given by Shri Alok Agrawal, Advisor, IMS. He mentioned about the classroom teaching being supplemented with regular visits by esteemed speakers and seminars held so far on the related issues prescribed in the syllabus as well. Requesting the help from participating members of LAC, he sought their kind advice to prepare law students to serve their country best and take the College to the higher level, at par with premier law schools.

Justice Kapoor gave a valuable suggestion that besides the core knowledge of Law, special skills are required to be chiseled to prepare students for practice. Speaking in the same vein, Mr Ejaz, a great legal eagle suggested that Law students are required to participate even in non law seminars/special lectures and programmes to turn out to be the best conflict healers. "Students are to be provided internship with the leading lawyers in the break time between the semesters". Mr Sanjay Jain, Sr Advocate emphasized on the synergetical transfer of knowledge and experience by permanent faculty and visiting faculty, comprising judges, practicing lawyers and other legal stalwarts.

Pushpinder K.Bansal, practicing lawyer advised that case studies alone are not sufficient and giving decided case assignments do not hone the analytical skills of students. "We should focus on the pending case assignments and let students come up with their likely decisions having applied their own reasoning and analytical skills. Ms Meera Mathur Harchandani, advocate of great eminence also laid stress on improving the reasoning skills of students by giving them problems of the common man. Other members: Sarvesh Chandra, Former Chairman, Appellate Tribunal for Foreign Exchange, Shekhar Vyas, Partner S.Vyas Associates and other legal experts also gave various valuable suggestions . Shri Rajeev Kumar Gupta, President, IMS, Alok Agrawal, Advisor, IMS, S.C.Kulshreshtha, Head, Training and Placement, Dr N.S.Azad, Principal Law College including law faculty members were present at the meeting.

The objective of constituting an advisory committee was to seek guidance and advice of legal luminaries to cultivate future law professionals in true sense for which IMS Law College has always been striving.




Special Lecture on Media and the Globalization

School of Journalism and Mass Communication organized a special lecture on' Media and the Globlisation' on Jan.22,2010. The lecture was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Shakuntala Roa, Professor , State University . New York. U. S. A. The event began with the welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) Devesh Kishore, Dean,Journalism. In her one hour lecture Dr. Shankuntala Rao said that media has played an important role in globalization. She highlighted that the globalization is not found very fruitful without localization. She gave example of Pakistan and South Africa. After her lecture there was an interactive session conducted by Prof. (Dr.) Devesh Kishore.. In this session Prof. (Dr). P. K. Seth . Dean, Management, shared his views and expressed the need of some monitoring body on media. Prof. (Dr.) N.S. Azad also emphasized the need of some regulatory body on media . At the end of the event Prof. (Dr. ) N. K. Trikha summed up with concluding remarks and gave Vote of thanks. The event was compeered by Dr. Vinita Gupta,Faculty.



Job-oriented workshop for Commonwealth Games

A two-day job-specific workshop was organized by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication for students who had been earlier encouraged to apply for certain lucrative positions in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games 2010. Held on March 25 and 26, this innovative workshop sought to prepare the IMS students to master the requirements of the prospective jobs which carry remunerations ranging from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 75,000 per month in the fields of organizing and supervising Press Conferences and writing Press Releases aboutthe Games.

The workshop was conducted by Prof. (Dr.) N.K.Trikha who made elaborate PowerPoint presentations on both the subjects separately. These were sharply focused on 'how to do it' so that the applicant students would be ready to take up the work with competence and confidence. Eminent Sports Journalist, Mr. V. Srivatsa gave a Special Lecture on the occasion in which he explained the 17 disciplines of the games to be played during CWG 2010, some of which are not even known to most Indians. He gave many precious tips to the students, based on his vast experience of covering such games in the past, for accomplishing job successfully.



IMS Publishing House's Very First Book Wins Prestigious Award

Hon'ble Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Shrimati Ambika Soni gave away the prestigious Bhartendu Harishchandra Maan Award to the book"Sampadan-Kal aurAaj", the first publication of the IMS Publishing House on March 29 at a solemn function in New Delhi. The book has been written by former lecturer, Mr. Ganga Sagar Gingh and edited by Dean, SJMC, Prof (Dr.) Devesh Kishore. A large audience comprising journalists and top ministry officials was present on the occasion.


Addressing a press conference later, IMS president, Shri Rajeev Kumar Gupta announced that a number of more books on management, law and computer science, beside journalism and mass communication are in the pipeline to be published. He said the objective of the IMS Publishing House was to provide quality prescribed books in the field of education which was facing acute shortage of books based on syllabi, and theoretical and experiential learning methodologies. The present book is written in simple and intelligible Hindi language to facilitate not only students but also working journalists in the area of editing. He informed media persons that the second IMS book "The Magic of Rahul Gandhi" was also doing well in the market.



International Research Projects: Third visit to Himalayan Region

IMS- research team met all the challenges of high mountains, tough terrain and bad roads in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand .The main objective of the third pilot visit was to conduct a deep study in the research area and the focus was on sampling and data collection . The visit was scheduled from 24th -28th March. The team interviewed 62 farmers in remote villages Haripur and Korwa in Dehradun district and Nisni and Kyark in Pauri Garhwal district. The sampling was done by the co-investigators of the project - Dr. Vinita Gupta, SJMC,IMS,Noida and Dr. V.LV Kameswari ,Pantnagar University with the help of two students of MJMC IV semester of IMS-Noida - Ms. Tasha Singh Pariharand Mr. Rajanikant Mishra The team conducted the study under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Devesh Kishore,he Principal Investigator of the project 'Empowerment of Farming Community through use of ICT's : A study in the Indian Himalayan Region' awarded to IMS-Noida by Nanyang Technological University , Singapore.



Tibetans will say .Thank you, India.- Tibetan Prime Minister-in-Exile

on March 5, 2009. Prime Minister of Tibetan Govt.-in-Exile, Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche announced at a special lecture at the Institute of Management Studies (IMS) that led by the Dalai Lama himself, all Tibetans will formally say: .Thank you, India. on the completion of 50 years of their stay in India on March 31, 2009.

This, he said, would be an expression of their deep sense of gratitude to the people and Government of India for the immense love and generosity they received in this country, enabling them to preserve their distinct culture and identity as a community and nation.

Speaking on .Indo-Tibetan Cultural and Political Relations and Future of Tibet., Prof. Rinpoche likened India and Tibet relations as between one soul and two bodies. The entire Tibetan culture owed its origin and foundation to the culture of India.
